Best Hiking Trails

Hiking is popular no matter where you are—and our state park is no exception! Here is an assortment of our best nature hikes for the brave adrenaline-seekers and the relaxed walkers.

Big Cave Trail

Distance: 2.7 miles

Difficulty: Medium


What to See

This popular trail loops you around to see the Twin Valley Cave. While AllTrails labels this hike as easy, it’s more of a moderate-level hike. The trail can be difficult to navigate, and it may be better as an out and back trail.


Stephen Falls

Distance: 0.3 miles

Difficulty: Moderate 


What to See

The renowned Stephen Falls is close to the entrance of the park, but it’s definitely worth a visit.


Meadow Valley

Distance: 7.8 miles

Difficulty: Moderate


What to See

Meadow Valley guides you through the heart of Governor Dodge State Park. It’s a longer trail that can get muddy, so be aware of that.


Mill Creek Loop

Distance: 3.2 miles 

Difficulty: Moderate


What to See

Those wanting to get lost in the trees will adore the Mill Creek Loop—a short hike through the woods. Dogs must be on a leash.


Enee Point

For those who want to see the fascinating geology throughout the park, Enee Point rocks for that! You can hike there by taking the Pine Cliff Trail to it.


The Pine Cliff Trail has many fans, and takes about 2.2 miles to complete. It’s a loop that can be hard to navigate, so be careful.

Doby Stables

While you can bring your own horses into the state park, those who don’t have a horse may need some assistance if horseback riding is something they want to do at Governor Dodge. The Doby Stables at the park’s entrance can help you get saddled up with a guide and some obedient steeds.

Governor Dodge Horse Trail

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: 4.5 miles


For casual riders, this trail should be the perfect option. It’s not too long, but offers some beautiful views.


Driftless Horse Trail

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: 16.1 miles


While this trail is long, it is considered to be an easy trail due to the level ground. You’ll be on the saddle all day, so be ready to take a few breaks!


Fishing and Water Sports

Governor Dodge’s most obvious features are its two lakes—Cox Hollow and Twin Valley. Both offer opportunities for you to swim, boat, fish, and participate in any other water activities you may be interested in!


If you want to go fishing, make sure you have a Wisconsin Fishing License on hand so you can legally fish in the state.
