If you consider yourself something of an outdoorsman, Blackhawk Lake should be your go-to attraction for rustic ventures. It’s only a 30-minute drive from Spring Valley Inn, and has an affordable entry fee so you can go fishing, boating, and hunting all day long.


Because you’ll want your vacation time to be used as effectively as possible, we’ve compiled some important info about the Blackhawk Lake experience so you know how to prepare for it.

Boating

Whether you have your own watercraft, or you’re wanting to rent, boating on Blackhawk is a worthwhile way to spend your day. There are seven different boat types available to you. Make sure you’ve taken the Wisconsin boater’s safety test before you arrive if you plan on piloting a boat.


Blackhawk Lake is considered a “No Wake Lake” which means you can’t go too fast while cruising through the water. Focus on fishing and relaxing instead.


Boat Rentals

Pontoon Boats / Motor Boats: There are four different sizes of pontoons to choose from. The smallest pontoon on offer seats six people, and the largest one seats 12. It’s perfect for a fishing or swimming trip.


Canoes / Kayaks

If you want to take exploration into your own hands, or you just want to save some money, renting a canoe or kayak might be the right choice for you.

Blackhawk Lake Fishing

This beautiful lake is one of the best fishing spots in Wisconsin. Its accessibility, size, and fish variety create a thrilling fishing experience every time you feel your line tugging. 


The man-made Blackhawk Lake is around 220 acres and has a depth of around 40 feet at the most. Because the lake is large, it allows for fish to grow to remarkable sizes. The lake’s size also means that you won’t have to compete for good fishing spots with other visitors. There’s room for everyone.

Make sure you have the necessary fishing permits if you want to angle in Blackhawk. You should also be aware of Wisconsin fishing regulations.

However, dedicated fishermen (or curious newcomers) will be on the icy Blackhawk Lake fishing away the day even after the lake has frozen over. Ice fishing is incredibly uncommon in certain parts of the country, but in Wisconsin it’s just another way to experience the sport.

Hunting

We’ve talked a lot about what you can do on the lake, hunting is the other major draw for Blackhawk visitors. There’s around 1500 acres designated for hunting pheasants, squirrels, ducks, and deer.


Before you arrive at the rec area, make sure you have your hunting licenses and permits before you take a shot at anything. You can buy them online from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. You should also be aware of the rec area’s rules, as well as hunting regulations from the state of Wisconsin.
